In 2005, I built my first 4-fin Moby. Id surfed it in waves up to about 5 feet and really liked it. One day, I thought the swell was pretty small, so I took my Moby to Blacks. Nothing else. I was lucky enough to have a key. When I got down to the road, the surf looked just like Id imagined. Pretty small, but clean. I put on my wetsuit, grabbed the Moby from the trunk of my truck, and closed the lid. I looked out at the lineup. A solid 6-foot set. Fuck! Well, it was the only board I had with me, so I went for it.
On my first wave, I fell because I thought I had to really pull back on the leashes. Nope. The board took off like a bat from hell. There was no end to how high it went. A few waves later, I was completely sold on this design and its versatility.
It soon became very popular; some of my good friends had this board. Interestingly, their sonssome of the best LJ reef surferstried it out and didnt want to give it back. They ordered duplicates. Not smaller, slimmer versions. The exact same boards. They actually rode them on the bigger days.
Because of its size, its a great board for beginners and a good alternative to a longboard. As it turned out, its suitable for all skill levels and types of surfers. The entry rocker is moderate, which helps with paddling. The exit rocker is fairly average, which helps with turning and allows the board to blend better into the waves. The fuller outline provides plenty of surface area for glide and speed. The rails are fuller but slightly more angular, with a lower apex that provides lift and control.
If I had only one board, it would be this one. Pure fun.

TEC – TORQ EPOXY COMPOSITE
Torq Epoxy Composite offers high-performance shapes in our state-of-the-art epoxy layup. These boards provide the best balance between lightness and durability. Using our own unique lamination process, were able to incorporate a very strong fiberglass layup consisting of 6oz and 4oz layers in a three-ply deck and a two-ply tail (with a four-layer rail overlap) combined with high-density EPS foam, while still achieving a board weight comparable to that of a lightweight fiberglass layup.
The result is a lightweight yet very stable board with good flex characteristics and, as with all torqs, an excellent price-to-performance ratio.
